This book Essentials of Boger’s Principle and Practice of Homoeopathy is a ‘collection’ to ‘connect’ the scattered valuable concepts deliberated by Boger which delineates the principles and the methodology of rational and successful clinical practice of Homoeopathy. These were lying unattended in the form of lectures, presentations, discussions with contemporary stalwarts and practitioners, case analysis and prescriptions by Boger at various time and circumstances at different platforms. This missionary work was accomplished through a thorough and intense search and compilation of all the useful literatures pertaining to Homoeopathy education and practice of the period of Boger (1890-1935). Only those articles which are found to be very meaningful and necessary for the students and practitioners are included in this book.

Boger was a voracious reader of Homoeopathic literature and was a man who believed in verifying the principles through practice before advocating it. Boger had a great role in reorganizing and modifying the dynamics of homoeopathy into practical homoeopathy.

A compilation of 66 write ups also could be referred to as ‘piece of gems’ on homoeopathy which are being placed as an assembled jewel in a book form made out of very precious pearls found lying at different places. It is expected that these pearls will certainly add to the wealth of Homoeopathy.

Sources - These lessons are related to the Principles of homoeopathy, Philosophy, Materia Medica, and Therapeutics as well as Repertory therefore essentially beneficial to all the learners of this rational art of healing.

A glance through the topics – Law of Cure, The philosophy of Similia, Finding the Similimum with the help of the Family Anamnesis, What Divides Us?, Choosing The Remedy, Choosing The Remedy, Gymnacladu and many more.

There are a number of very interesting cases reproduced in this book which are successfully dealt with by Boger. One can really enjoy reading those cured cases and derive practical learning from each case.

    Dr. Gobind Narayan

“Essentials of Boger’s Principles and Practice of Homoeopathy”, the collected work of Dr. C. M. Boger comprises of 66 chapters. These writings bring out in an inimitable way the principles of Homeopathy as expounded by Hahnemann, but with the spirit of Dr. Boger; thereby helping us to understand further what the Master taught us. Boger gives us insight of the Homeopathy practiced in that glorious age. This book is a collection’ of the untouched scattered valuable concepts deliberated by Boger which are very useful in clinical practice. This missionary work was accomplished through painstaking search and compilation of the valuable literature which reflects Homoeopathic education and practice of that period (1890-1935). The author begins his book with the chapter ‘what is Homoeopathy?’ In this chapter, the author focuses on the system of homoeopathy, difference between other system and homoeopathy and what a homoeopath should do. In one of the paragraphs, the author writes, ‘an allopath is a natural opportunist while the real homoeopath is inevitably a vitalist’. In another he is saying, ‘the homoeopathist should know his tools thoroughly (sound homoeopathic books, materia medicas, repertories and card indices). He also mentioned the different era of medical history such as bloodletting, mercurialisation, poisons, serology, etc. Chapter 2- Homoeopathic Science In this chapter, author mentioned the difference between homoeopathic specialist and allopathic specialist. He explained that the real homoeopathic physician is specialist in materia medica and the exemplification of the law which include almost every system of the body while specialist of other system naturally inclines to a narrower view of things, e.g., dermatologist, microscopist, etc. he also mentioned that disease is truly dynamic in origin, we can only perceive its manifestation and it is only treated by dynamic method. Chapter 3 – What is homoeopathy stand for? With ever changing medical literature, here the author tried to explain homoeopathic modus operandi and its influence with these changes. While the teachings of Hahnemann were followed till last century which also saw the rise of cellular pathology by Virchow followed by bacteriology which became cornerstone of regular medicine. It also influenced the homoeopathist who approached the polypharmacy of old school and thought of them as modern and liberal protagonist but it proved a false step which led to a polluted and unscientific form of practice. To seek the truth of homoeopathic science, few books of renowned author have been mentioned e.g., “ Homoeopathy; All About It” By J.H. Clarke , “ Fifty Reasons For Being A Homoeopath” By J.C. Burnett, “ Organon Of Medicine, Materia Medica Pura, Chronic Diseases: Their Peculiar Nature And Their Homoeopathic Cure” By C.F.S. Hahnemann, “ Lectures On Homoeopathic Philosophy” By J.T. Kent, “ Leaders In Homoeopathic Therapeutics With Grouping And Classification” By E.B. Nash, “Comparative Materia Medica” By E.A. Farrington, “A Synoptic Key Of The Materia Medica” By C.M. Boger. Chapter 4- The standing of Homoeopathy (1911) The author wrote about the practice of homoeopathy that state boards, prejudiced examiners and lying about it do not harm; but false practice is its greatest enemy. The power of the similimum is a constant source of pleasure to careful prescriber which is cited by an example of a highly educated man who underwent surgery but for vain, after persuasion tried homoeopathy and got cured. Chapter 5- What homoeopathy means (1920) “Similia Similibus Curentur” – that likes seemed to cure likes. Hahnemann had given successful treatment of cholera and typhoid fever. In this chapter author mentioned the importance of prevention than cure and also the importance of dynamic medicine and its marvelous results in cases of acute diseases, epidemics. He also explains the significance of symptoms which serves as indices for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. The coarser symptoms are of more diagnostic and finer ones of therapeutic importance. He mentioned about the repetition of medicines with 9 clinical cases for better understanding. Chapter 6 – The Evolution of homoeopathy (1914) The collateral systems have been mentioned here with the difference between homoeopathy and isopathy by citing example of Psorinum. Chapter 7- Why Homoeopathy? 5 cases have been given as examples where surgeon reported nothing could be done but Homoeopathic treatment made complete cure. Chapter 8- A contribution on the relation of homoeopathy to the sciences (1904) The chapter begins with comparison of earlier provings and later provings which according to the author has a vast difference- most of the later proved remedies have been experimented with in a very desultory fashion, and theft pathogeneses abound in meaningless generalities that lead nowhere and are often worse than useless. Even the disadvantage of keynote symptoms has been mentioned here which are adopted by nowadays physician which limits their activities to the number of keynotes known to him or of which he may readily avail himself through the literature at hand. Chapter 9- The Law of Cure (1916) Absolute cure means the establishment and maintenance of mental and physical harmony. Also mentioned about the Hering’s Law of Cure which also explains that all cure proceeds from soul through the spiritual body and finally manifest themselves in the physical body. Chapter 10- The Philosophy of Similia Homoeopathy, springing from and preserving the vitalism of the ancients, is willingly or unwillingly (nolens volens) leaven ofmodern medicine. The realist inclined towards the material and mechanical means, while the philosophically inclined works out his problems from the dynamic standpoint (idealist or dynamic schools of thought). Chapter 11- What we should know What we should know is that the physician needs all available evidence of disease before attempting to prescribe. Hahnemann said that in case of paucity of symptoms or the presence of overshadowing symptoms, the remedy could be selected on basis of its peculiar symptoms or concomitant. This has been cited by various examples throughout the chapter. Chapter 12- Studies in the Philosophy of Healing (1921) Dynamism is an essential factor of our very nature and life and must be reckoned with if we would be efficient healers of the sick. Curing is mild and gentle process, devoid of suppressive measures, narcotics, etc., all of whose finalities lean deathward. Chapter 13- Vital Energy This chapter deals with definition of energy, vital force, disease and restoration of order. Energy has been defined in this chapter as “storehouse of vitality” and in human body all 3 forms of energy – physical in the tissues, the dynamic in the brain and nervous system and spiritual in the mind. In respect to disease condition, the author explained the condition with the example of a runaway train. Chapter 14- The Language of Disease The language of disease is nothing but the signs and symptoms and this chapter thoroughly deals with symptoms, its type, importance of signs with supportive examples. Apart from this, progress of disease has also been explained with beautiful difference of Rhus tox, Bryonia, Arsenic album, Arnica, Baptisia in case of typhoid fever. Chapter 15- Taking the Case (1909) The author tried to cover the general schema of case taking with detailed description of each point like location, sensation, modalities, concomitants as well as the peculiarities of the case, importance of time modalities. Chapter 16- How to Take the Case (1920) This chapter deals with the importance of proper case taking and few clinical cases have been mentioned. Also, in one of the paragraphs the author explains the importance of diagnostic symptoms in prescription with example of Bryonia (pleurisy) and Kali bichromicum (duodenal ulcer). Chapter 17- The Similimum (1922) Here, the author mentioned two principal ways of finding the indicated remedy. One method is to pick out the odd, strange, peculiar symptoms from among the general morbid ones. The other method includes finding the remedy with general symptoms. Chapter 18- Finding the Similimum-I Here, the author mentioned about the way of finding the similimum. Viewed from the angle of similia, author focuses on 3 points- the bearing of aetiology, anamnesis and hereditary disease aspect. The last point is especially helpful in those single symptom cases which Hahnemann called the most difficult of all. Finally, he focuses the information obtained on the patient in hand and thus what real homoeopath must do- differentiate his remedy. Chapter 19- Finding the Similimum-II (1930) Author points out that the specific application of similimum will always remain more or less an individual affair. One case has been given with indicated remedy. Chapter 20- Finding the Similimum with the Help of the Family Anamnesis According to a method by Cyrus M. Boger Importance of anamnesis as described by the author as follows is helpful in unilateral cases (most difficult cases) and patients without characteristic symptoms. Comparing the two series i.e., the patient’s disease tendency series and the family disease tendency series, similimum can be worked out with the help of repertory. Chapter 21- The Power of Similimum Homoeopathy is the one whose ramifications interlock with all of the others most intimately. Importance and uses of imponderabilia has also been mentioned. Chapter 22- The Indicted Remedy (1922) This chapter deals with the different ways of getting the indicated medicine, either through repertorisation or cross questioner or degree of similarity. Chapter 23- What indicates the remedy? (1922) Here the author criticized the polypharmacy and misuse of disease diagnosis. Chapter 24- How Shall I find the Remedy? This chapter deals with various ways of finding the indicated remedy. Here, in a case the author stresses upon exciting and maintaining causes as well as the location, sensation, modalities and concomitant. Also, sign and symptoms of a patients are the prime importance in selection of a remedy. Chapter 25- Some Thoughts on Prescribing Distressing symptoms appear during the course of chronic diseases should be dealt with attention. Importance of family history is mentioned in order to complete the symptom image of any one individual sickness. This is the main reason for different prescription from different angles seen by physician. Even, various steps of forming portrait of disease are mentioned. Chapter 26- What Divides Us? Homoeopathy is far superior to every other form of treatment and the great beauty of it is that every new scientific development only adds strength to its already commanding prestige. Chapter 27- Homoeopathic Reactions (1926) Reactions occur between things occupying kindred states or planes. Author focuses on the reaction of vital force and of remedies. He also mentioned about non-homeopathic reaction which is more or less violent nature and may even do vital damage. Chapter 28- Grading of Symptoms (1925) Repertory is the index of Materia Medica. Importance of gradation of remedy has been given here. Many examples have been cited with rubrics which may have many remedies under it but we have to differentiate it according to the grades and hierarchy of the symptoms covered by the case. Chapter 29- Philosophy and the Repertory A repertory is essentially an index and may be advantageously used as such for discovering particular symptoms as well as for grouping remedies containing similar combinations in their pathogeneses. The trinity of homoeopathy are also mentioned – the law of cure, single remedy, minimum dose. Chapter 30- Reason and Fact Here we will learn about Law of Life, Nature’s call for help, peculiarities of epidemic, Doctrine of Signature etc. The author beautifully describes the Doctrine of signature with citing examples. Chapter 31- Random notes It deals with general discussion about medicine, Homoeopathy, Hahnemann, Symptoms. Every symptom picture shows three phases- constitutional, general conformation and the peculiarities. He mentions that all 3 must be well met before the similimum can be seen. Chapter 32- Observations on Prescribing The author says that the better we know our original materia medica the less will we feel the need of newer and but partially proven drugs, although the best prescribers have, at times, been compelled to resort to them for special occasions. He has given examples of Pulsatilla and Senecio aurens in case of functional amenorrhoea of puberty, Urtica urens in case of urticaria plus pinworm plus pale stool. Chapter 33- Correct Prescription (from Synoptic Key) Correct prescribing is the art of carefully fitting pathogenetic to clinical symptoms. The author arranged modalities, mental symptoms, sensations and objective aspect in descending order of importance in forming the contour of disease. He called modalities as natural modifiers of sickness and also mentioned various forms of modalities. Few points about repetition of same medicine have also been discussed. Chapter 34- Is There a Law of Dose? This chapter particularly deals with the process of potentisation and the discussion between stalwarts which revolves around Fincke’s method of potentisation. Chapter 35- Choosing the Remedy Here, the author beautifully opened the chapter with aphorism 152 for direction of selection of remedy. He further adds on many more important points for the selection of remedy such as changes of personality and temperament, intellectual and moral proclivities, seat of local diseases, etc. He also discussed about the importance of concomitant, anamnesis, accessory symptoms and modalities in selection of remedy. Chapter 36- The Repetition of the Dose I The author basically emphasizes on the single dose of properly selected medicine and not to repeat frequently which usually disappoint the physician. In non-recurring acute diseases like small pox, scarlet fever, etc., every repetition tends to retard the cure. He also mentioned about the change in the sick condition which embraces 3 events after the administration of carefully selected remedy. Chapter 37- The Repetition of the Dose II In this chapter, the author further elaborated the condition of repetition of remedy and where to wait and watch. It also deals with the importance of second prescription. Chapter 38- Regularity and Progress- Successful practice depends upon certain more or less fully developed innate faculties, and that our present methods of training do but little to up build them and thus make real healers of the sick. Chapter 39- The Undeveloped Picture– The successive sickness of one individual bear enough resembelence to clearly show that each human entity reacts to disturbances in its own particular way. After an acute disease explosion, the submerged symptoms again slowly emerge from their hiding, finally showing themselves to be part and parcel of a deeply imbedded miasm which can only be eradicated by the most careful prescribing. Also, he mentioned about the provers that only educated prover should not be included in the study. Chapter 40- The Whole Case This whole chapter deals with the drawback of keynote symptom. Few instructions for the beginner have also been mentioned. Chapter 41- Suppression Here, suppression has been defined as the forcible removal of some effect or symptom by external measures, regardless of the welfare of the patient. He also points out the effect of cleanliness in terms of miasm. How suppression of sycosis and psora happened is also mentioned with examples of the cases and its treatment. Chapter 42- Signs and the Law This chapter deals with the danger of too much individualization which is a novel one and often neglected. The usual way is to advocate individualization without limit but there is a limit to that and if carried too far it will lead to many mistakes. A case of Niccolum has been mentioned to explain how to read in between lines to get the desired remedy for any case. Chapter 43- The Relation of Homoeopathy to Pathology This chapter contains very interesting facts and discussion about pathology and clinical symptoms. The discussion between Dr. H.C. Allen and Dr. Boger about their views on clinical symptoms with example of Lycopodium and Calc carb. is worth reading. Chapter 44- The Genus Epidemicus This chapter deals with the idea and application of Genus Epidemicus with examples. Even two methods of prescribing that is high and low potency prescribing has been mentioned. Chapter 45- Clinical Cases and Verification A well proven remedy is worth hundreds of fragments. With this statement, the author describes the importance of a well proven medicine with example of Lachesis. Apart from this, case discussion has been the most beneficial part of this chapter. Chapter 46- Tuberculosis – the Medical Side of the Question Tuberculosis is a complex dyscrasia and will hardly yield to single remedy and the treatment of various phases of tuberculosis is dependent upon so many factors direct and contingent. This chapter deals with the approach and homoeopathic treatment of tuberculosis with examples of remedy. Chapter 47- Three Liver Cases Three different cases with three different remedies i.e. Carduus mar, Scrophularia nodosa and Menispermum canadense have elaborately illustrated in this chapter. Chapter 48- The Homoeopathic Viewpoint in Cancer This chapter solely deals with the approach of cancer and its treatment. Few examples of great stalwarts have also been cited. Chapter 49- Panaritium Different remedies with indication have been mentioned for panaritium in this chapter. Chapter 50-The Metals and their Relation to the Functions of the Reproductive Organs One thing is very stressed upon in this chapter is piece-meal prescription which is nothing but prescription based on few symptoms. Chapter 51- Points in Obstetrical Therapeutics One of the most interesting chapters of the book to read, which contain different conditions of pregnancy and its management. Many remedies with indication have been given such as Sepia, Medorrhinum, Viburnum, Arnica and many more. Chapter 52- Climacteric Remedies 21 remedies with indication for climaxis have been mentioned in this chapter. Chapter 53- Diabetic Gangrene A case of diabetes insipidus cured with Nat.Sul.30 has been mentioned. Chapter 54- Clinical Cases Total 7 different cases have been presented with prescribed medicine. Chapter 55- A Case of Cholecystitis a very interesting case of Euonymus has been mentioned in Gallbladder stone. Chapter 56- The Choleric Complex The author focuses on the efficacy of homoeopathic treatment in diseases of infants and children. He also mentions that in affections of infants the objective is uppermost while in those of adults the subjective generally predominates. Chapter 57- Homoeopathy in Diseases of Children Few remedies in disease condition of children especially cholera, cholera morbus and cholera infantum have been mentioned and explained with differentiation with connected medicines. Chapter 58- The Sick Child Here it is mentioned that the first study is the child itself; particularly all of his dominating moods, for this are the master key to every sickness. Children are sick and they act their symptoms and one must be prepared to read that acting. Objective symptoms of many polychrest remedies have been added and how to observe that has also been mentioned. Chapter 59- The Study of Materia Medica This chapter deals with the way to study the drugs of Materia Medica. Study shows every drug to be a living, moving conception with attributes which arise, develop, expand and pass away just as diseases do. Chapter 60- The Development of Materia Medica The future development of our Materia Medica is a subject of interest to every true Hahnemannian which is a necessity and it is our duty to develop our art to the highest pinnacle of perfection. Chapter 61- Materia Medica, a Study This chapter shows the method of approaching towards a medicine while reading Materia Medica. Chapter 62- The Genius of Our Materia Medica This chapter generally deals with the Materia Medica, medicines, how to get the picture of the medicine in diseased person and the Genius of the remedy. Chapter 63- The Strontium Salts The purpose of this chapter is to point out the necessity of proving the various Strontium salts, in order that the most active one may speedily come into use. An elaborative case has been mentioned to show the effective prescription of Strontium. Chapter 64- Gymnacladus This rare drug has been described with a wonderful case of stitching pain and appearance of blue tongue. Chapter 65- Veterinary Homoeopathy This is a short chapter dealing with the importance of Homoeopathy in cases of animals and a very interesting case has also been mentioned. Chapter 66- President Address This book ends with the final chapter i.e., President address. It is a very well compiled work which is truly inspirational and should be read and reread by every homeopathic physician. I would like to recommend this book to the homoeopathic fraternity for better understanding of homoeopathic science and profession will really be enlighten with these collected lectures and articles.

    Dr Aparna Rajput

Legendary Prof. Dr Shashi Kant Tiwari has diligently collected the scattered valuable writings and documentaries of Dr Boger and interlaced them into a remarkable compilation titled “Essentials of Boger’s Principles and Practice of Homoeopathy. Dr Boger sternly believed in verifying the principles through practice before advocating them, and this book is a classic assembly of it. The book outlines a very unique style and comprises 66 chapters, most of the chapters commence with a discussion of the topic with a practical demonstration followed by a panel of discussion by eminent practitioners and stalwarts of Homoeopathy. This book focuses mainly on the attainment of working knowledge of the law of action and considers it to be the inherent right of every Homoeopathic student. This book takes through many important topics which convey a deeper understanding of the principles and methodology of rational and successful clinical practice of Homoeopathy. Dr Boger advises every Homoeopath to have a thorough knowledge of his tools, that is, an insight into the books and literature on Homoeopathy. He states evolution of the Homoeopathic system is mainly attributed to the learned faculty who imbibe knowledge in students. He has clearly defined concepts of susceptibility and central life which should be understood as a unit of expression and disincline towards piece-meal prescription. Boger highlights the advancement of the Materia Medica as the need of the hour, which could take place by systematic, purposeful and planned proving. He stressed considering the symptoms of peculiar characteristics nature in making the choice of the remedy and disregards the reverse methods of using keynotes to decide on the choice of remedy. He convinces physicians to not only find the foci but go beyond, to get the totality. If one intends absolute cure necessity of minute life history is well elicited by Dr Boger. Dr Boger describes Energy in a threefold form spiritual(mind), dynamic (brain and nervous system) and physical(tissues). In relation to homoeopathy and Pathology, Dr Boger states every sickness has a personal element and thus disregards the prescription of specific medicines. To make a rational choice of remedy it should be a true reflection of everything in the patient’s body. Dr Boger emphasizes looking for the characteristics of the patient rather than the characteristics of the remedy, focusing on finer and subjective symptoms and acquainting oneself with the language of disease changes of personality and temperament, expression of the intellectuals and moral peculiarities, the seat of the disease, concomitants and modalities, cravings and aversion, aggravation and amelioration, periodicity of symptoms, analysis of symptoms- generalities, modalities, circumstances, locality, sensation -general /localised. He states a lot of bearing must be given to the anamnesis, aetiology and heredity of the disease aspects, especially in unilateral cases where family anamnesis is useful in finding the similimum. He mentions that one-sided diseases are due to the suppressive power of Psora. He discusses the grading of symptoms to particular diseases, organs and individuals. He mentions the trinity in Homoeopathy- law of cure, single remedy and minimum dose. Regarding the topic of suppression, he states everything that distorts the natural image of the disease is suppression, which turns disease movement toward more vital organs. He mentions the significance of a single dose and wait-and-watch policy and defies injudicious repetition of dose. Relating to the undeveloped picture he insists to look into deeper lying manifestations of an embedded miasm after the acute explosion. He defines the Genus epidemicus in relation to susceptibility and elicits in every case to be a mixture of general drug reactions plus the psoric, idiosyncratic or personal element. He gives special reference to clinical cases of membranous croup, tuberculosis, liver cases, cancer, Panaritium, the Metals and their relation to the functions of the reproductive organs, points in obstetrical therapeutics, climacteric remedies, diabetic gangrene, choleraic complex, Homoeopathy in diseases of children, he gives special mention to the study, development and genius of Materia Medica, strontium salts, gymnacladus, the doctrine of signature and veterinary Homoeopathy. Dr Boger offers a deep insight into the science of Homoeopathy through his lectures and discussions of the Principles of Homoeopathic, Philosophy, Materia medica, Therapeutics, Clinical cases, and Repertory and thus would incorporate integrated knowledge to the readers. Each chapter gives the essence and deeper understanding of Homoeopathy and its principles in a distinct language. In most of the chapters, there are clinical cases along with discussions of various stalwarts and practitioners which help the students to practically grasp the concepts of Homoeopathy. This precious compilation is a great contribution to all the diligent followers of Homoeopathy which would not be possible without the painstaking effort of Prof. Dr Shashi Kant Tiwari. About Prof. Dr Shashi Kant Tiwari Prof. Dr Shashi Kant Tiwari is a legendary name in the Homoeopathic system, his passion for the system is obvious through his contribution as a Teacher, Practitioner, and Author. Dr. R Samaran

At present Homoeopathic Students and Practioners are exposed to various new concepts and doctrines in Homoeopathy and many literatures by old Masters are buried deep beneath the sands of time. Dr. Boger is one such master Homeopath, who had taken homoeopathy to next level, by offering a deep insight into all aspects of the science of Homoeopathy through his writings and discussions on Homoeopathic philosophy, Materia Medica, Repertory constructions and other original writings. Unfortunately, Bogers’s work is scattered throughout many books and journals in such a way that accessing the information is a difficult and tedious work. Prof.Dr.Shashi Kant Tiwari had meticulously collected the scattered pearls of Boger writings and woven them into an excellent compilation titled “Essentials of Boger’s Principles & Practice of Homoeopathy” It offers a full and accurate description of Boger’s teachings on Homoeopathy. This book contains 66 chapters which, covers all the most important contribution of Boger to Homoeopathic literature on -Principles & Philosophy, Monographs, Materia Medica, Repertory constructions, Discussions, Clinical cases, Therapeutics and other original writings published in The Recorder, The IHA Transactions and other homoeopathic publications. Each chapters covers the Homoeopathic essence in a brief and easily comprehensible language. To mention few experts from the book-Boger states that, the homoeopathist should know his tools thoroughly , this means access to and ability to use sound Homoeopathic books , he has particularly mentioned Hahnemann’s Organon & Chronic Diseases, Boeninghausen’s Characteristics and Repertory, Jahr’s Forty Years ,Wheeler’s The case of Homoeopathy, Burnett’s Fifty Reasons, Nash Leaders, Farrington’s Lectures, Kent’s Lectures, Hahnemann’s and Allen’s Materia Medica and his Synoptic key , He said Homoeopathist guided by these books will inevitably lead him to getting better results. He gives importance to the single dose -wait and watch method. Boger has cited that Hahnemann obtained his antipsoric symptoms only from doses of the primary sort almost exclusively, as primary symptoms stand in the front rank for curative purposes far out classing the secondary ones. He also states that symptoms collected can be systematized and categorized for study under-Subjective, Objective, General, Special, Modalities, Periodicity, Pyrexia. He also spoke on the disadvantages of Keynote prescription. Boger points out clearly that Hahnemann limits the characteristics to the individualizing symptoms of natural disease and not to those which the patient possesses as a constitutional Idiosyncrasy. Boger describes Energy in a threefold form in Human body- Physical energy in the tissues, Dynamic energy in the brain and nervous system and the Spiritual in the mind. Boger gives preference to ascending scale of potency, he also describes if the patient has stopped progress and is doing nothing, the “do nothing’’ stage itself can be considered as symptom and remedies like Opium, Phosphoric acid, Thuja or Sulphur can be considered. Boger also writes that in unilateral cases and Patients without characteristic symptoms, simillimum can be derived with family anamnesis- Comparison of patient’s current disease tendencies with disease tendencies of his blood relationships. Boger states that after prescription the state of illness remains same or change. The later has three possibilities, the condition is ameliorated, aggravated or disease alters its symptom complex and accordingly what has to be done. He also states real cure occurs when symptoms recede from above downwards, within outward and in reverse order of their coming. The Boger’s articles are mesmerizing and once we start reading, it motivates the reader, to dive further deep into this treasure trove of knowledge. It is an amalgamation of all related subjects of Homoeopathy and Medicine in general. There are many clinical cases, Therapeutics, many chapters in the end have an honest discussion of the concepts by different stalwarts of Homoeopathy. This book is a must for all the serious students, teachers, practioners and enthusiasts of Homoeopathy. A special thanks to Prof.Dr.Shashi Kant Tiwari and B.Jain Publishers(P) Ltd, for compiling and publishing the Boger’s Masterpiece. I am grateful and feel honored to pen down my review of this wonderful book. Thank you

There was no any book on Boger's philosophy for principles and practice of Homoeopathy like Kent's philosophy, Robert 's philosophy, Dunhum' s philosophy. This book " Essentials of Boger's principle and practice of Homoeopathy " by Dr. S. K Tiwari fill this space for Homoeopathic fraternity. In this book Dr. Tiwari presented the concept of Dr. Boger's on practice of Homoeopathy. He presented cured casese of Boger in the book. This book only contains papers that were deemed to be extremely important and useful for students and practitioners. This book is a “collection” to “link” the dispersed useful notions considered by Boger, which defines the fundamentals and the methodology of logical and effective clinical practice of homoeopathy. This book contains 56 chapter in 326 pages about concepts, philosophy and different topics on Homoeopathy. I recommend this book to the students’ teachers and practitioners of homoeopathy for a better simplified understanding of Boger's principles and practice.

    Dr Rupesh Tiwary

“Essentials of Boger’s Principle and Practice of Homoeopathy” by Prof. Dr Shashi Kant Tiwari is the compilation of 66 articles written by Dr Cyrus Maxwell Boger. Dr. Boger does not need any introduction in the field of homoeopathy. He has left the colossal footprints upon Hahnemannian Homoeopathy which is loved and recognized by every conscientious student of homoeopathic science. Apart from Boger Boenninghausen's Characteristics & Repertory, Synoptic Key to the Materia Medica, Card index Repertory and General analysis, Time of Remedies & Moon Phases there is a compilation of 28 articles regarding different topics of homoeopathy were published under the title “Studies in the philosophy of Healing” by Roy & Co. though the name of the compiler is missing in the available prints. At present for Indian book market this book will serve as the milestone for understanding and learning the teachings of homoeopathy from Boger’s point of view. This book contains 43 more articles than “The Studies in the philosophy of Healing”. 23 articles are common in both these books. The article “Thoughts on the philosophy of healing” is available as “Studies in the philosophy of healing” in the present book. The articles not included in present book from “The Studies in the philosophy of Healing” are as follows: 1) Causticum 2) Cobaltum 3) Coccus Cacti 4) Magnesia Carbonica 5) Syphilinum The book begins with the preface followed by the life history of Dr Cyrus Maxwell Boger. There After some articles related to General discussion to homoeopathy (from article no 1 to article no 8). From article no 9 to article no 45 various topics related to general homoeopathic philosophy( For example Case taking, case analysis & evaluation of symptoms, follow up analysis, suppression and drug proving etc) are discussed. . Article no. 45 is specifically about the clinical verification which is vital for clinical understanding. Article no 46 to article no 58 are related to homoeopathic therapeutics which is special point of interest for the clinicians. After that Article no. 59 to Article no 64 is related to Materia Medica. Few special articles regarding genus epidemicus and veterinary homoeopathy is worth reading. For handling the one sided and underdeveloped cases one can get wonderful tip from the 39th article apart from many other hints scattered in different articles. “Relationship of homoeopathy to pathology” will be definitely eye opener for the practioners who neglects the significance of pathology in homoeopathic prescriptions. So, this book contains various articles regarding case taking, case analysis and therapeutics of different clinical conditions like Cancer, obstetrics, tuberculosis, panaratia, climacterics, repertory, etc which means it’s a complete package for every homoeopath from beginners to academicians as well as research scholars. We hope that the original sources of the articles will be added along with the date of publication in future editions which will be more helpful for tracing Boger’s comprehensive developmental journey as prescient sage. As because there is no other book regarding Dr. Boger’s works available with such a huge collection, this may prove as essential book for the PGTs of Materia Medica, Organon of Medicine as well as Repertory and other branches also. Prof. Dr. Shashi Kant Tiwari has definitely addressed this much awaited need of the homoeopathic fraternity. I wish this book to be the part of BHMS syllabus so that the future students may get these wonderful ideas for lucid understanding of homoeopathy as the mandatory part of their syllabus. The aim of this book is to connect the scattered concepts of Boger in order to practice successfully in clinical point of view. Boger had a great role in reorganizing the dynamics of homoeopathy into practical homoeopathy. This he has done through delivering lectures, discussions, etc among that 66 “piece of gems” are added to this compilation. This book contains principles of homoeopathy, philosophy, materia medica and therapeutics as well as repertory. In order to give clear cut idea of the principles of homoeopathy this book has been compiled with the sources from Kent lectures, principles and art of cure by Stuart Close. This book also includes biography of Dr. Cyrus Maxwell Boger and publishers note. It contains 66 chapters with short profile of author at the end. It contains explanation regarding the homoeopathy which is the only system which teaches the medicine in its fullness, where each and every student can work based on law of action and reaction. Homoeopaths are real vitalists. It includes about how the homoeopaths should be, how to hard work like master in order to attain perfect cure. This also states that Hahnemann was not ignorant regarding the germ borne disease and that dynamized remedies are sufficient for their cure. Importance of similia similibus curanter and in order to obtain cure, it is most important to observe each and every minute things from the patient. The author has mentioned the importance of reading. Clarke’s homoeopathy, Burnett’s “50 reasons for being a homoeopath”, Hahnemann’s organon, Kent’s philosophy, Nash leader, Farrington’s materia medica and repertory are some of the books the author has referred from. True learning begins when we place the bias aside and preconceived idea aside, and have explained regarding the teaching method in colleges in order to attain cure in patients. The author has illustrated the struggle between dynamism and materialism. The author extraordinarily explicated what homoeopathy means, how it was former and how it is improving along with the science. The victory of homoeopathy in acute diseases, the success of homoeopathy in cholera has been clearly illustrated with the uniqueness of the drugs and its adaptability, convertibility and the repetition of doses. The author alluringly expounded the evolution of homoeopathy by our great master Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Clear cut cured cases have been included with the method of prescription. He has described some single remedy rubrics, homoeopathic specific remedy in aphorism 153, the explication of law of cure plays a major role in the life of physician one who genuinely wants to give cure to the patient by learning this one can safely, effectually and permanently cure the patient. The author comprehensibly stated that our way of providing therapy completely depends upon the breadth of our mind. He also mentioned the calm way of treatment by the homoeopaths. Most importantly the author has stated that we are often compelled to choose the remedy from the standpoint of diagnosis, but this method brings numerous pitfalls, so this has to be avoided. Illustrations of incipiency held from some peculiarity, often obscure with increasing tenacity. The author made us to understand the importance of the subject of energy, which is most necessary to study the homoeopathic philosophy clearly explicated the importance of vital energy in disease, the restoration of health. Importance of symptomatology which is termed as language of disease is illustrated in an authenticated manner. The structured format of taking a case have been mentioned like location, origin, the method of case taking, the modality, mind, concomitants, peculiarities and the time, which provides the physician an idea for collecting data from the patient. Apart from explaining a structured format, he has also mentioned the way of taking the case, how the case is to be collected how to reach the appropriate medicine which makes the role of physician simple. The failures faced by prescribing the remedy based on keynotes are brought into light by the author. He has beautifully added the conversations between Boger and other stalwarts. He brought into light the importance of anamnesis and its role in finding the similimum, he has extracted data from the article written by Boger in 1924 which is named as “Finding The Similimum” have illustrated with the case. The author completely removed physicians’ confusion in selecting indicated remedy by explaining it in a great manner. Apart from this he also stated the reaction by our vital force, grading of symptoms. Uses of repertory, the Boenninghausen’s article and its importance are stated. The authenticity of doctrine of signature in homoeopathy and some random notes by Boger have been included. Topic like the relationship of homoeopathy to pathology brings wider angle of thinking in the physician in order to prescribe appropriate medicine. He enhanced the view of homoeopathy in treating cancer, which made the readers to approach in a confident manner; the author elaborative gave an idea regarding treating child cases, liver disease, and tuberculosis. The action of metals upon reproductive system and handling of female related cases have been included. The description regarding strontium salts are explained clearly. He has also mentioned the utility of the remedy GYMNACLADUS as a separate chapter with case. Author made great work by compiling such book which is more helpful in understanding each and every way to attain cure. Working in father Muller Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Mangalore, since 1995 Contributed a chapter on Murphy’s Repertory in Essentials of repertorisation by Dr Shashi Kant Tiwari, has published research articles. The best book can remain undiscovered until and unless, we are inquisitive to know about it. I have heard about Robert Bannan’s collective writings on Boger’s Analysis but never had the chance to access it. As “Essentials of Boger’s Principles & Practice of Homoeopathy” contains all the collections of his articles, writings, lectures & discussions, this book can be the eye opener for many in the Homoeopathic fraternity. This book has got 66 chapters. Most of the chapter presents a new vision which was hardly known before. The followers can thoroughly accomplished this debuted with the pride that “I know boger’s concept thoroughly”. The meat of the book is far more focused on Boger’s ideas and opinions which were rarely known by the homoeopathic profession before. Each chapter has its own novelty focus and variety which was never known before. Especially the chapter on “Case Analysis “which demands greater attention for practical tips. Chapter 20 “Finding the Similimum with the help of family anamnesis according to a method by Boger” is very helpful and valuable in practice. The title of the speaks for itself, in its contribution to highlight Boger’s principles. It has been a excellent compilation by Dr Shashi Kant Tiwari to the field of Homoeopathy which will best presentation especially to under graduates & post graduates for their understanding as well as their examination purposes. Dr Shashi Kant Tiwari was my Principal, HOD and guide. He is renowned for his learning & practice hand has been called Hahnemannn of Manglore. It is only possible for him to compile such master piece. All the books written by him are useful asset for the Homoeopaths. It is indeed my great honor and pride to work with him.

We have Lectures on Homoeopathic Philosophy by Kent, Principles and Art of cure by HA Robert, The Genius of Homoeopathy by Stuart Close as guide book on principles of Homoeopathy but no book on Principle and Practice of Homoeopathy by Boger. This book fills the lacunae. The author collected various lectures and articles by Boger and complied in the form of book for the prospects of homoeopathic education and practice. In this book, several really intriguing cases are recreated and successfully handled by Boger. Reading those cured cases is incredibly enjoyable, and each case offers useful lessons. This missionary labour was completed through a thorough and exhaustive study of all relevant literature referring to homoeopathy teaching and practise during the Boger era, as well as compilation of that literature (1890-1935). This book only contains papers that were deemed to be extremely important and useful for students and practitioners. This book, Essentials of Boger’s Principle and Practice of Homoeopathy, is a “collection” to “link” the dispersed useful notions considered by Boger, which defines the fundamentals and the methodology of logical and effective clinical practise of homoeopathy. In the form of lectures, presentations, conversations with prominent contemporary thinkers and practitioners, case analyses, and recommendations by Boger at various times and circumstances on numerous platforms, these were laying unattended were included in this book. A collection of 66 essays on homoeopathy that are being presented as an assembled jewel in book form made out of extremely valuable pearls found lying at various locations is also known as a “piece of gems” or “piece of jewels” on homoeopathy. These pearls are anticipated to significantly increase the riches of homoeopathy. I recommend this book to the students’ teachers and practitioners of homoeopathy for a better simplified understanding of our principles and practice.
